42: Focus on What You Have Done and Give Gratitude

It’s so easy to focus on your big to-do list and focus only on what you have yet to accomplish. But have you ever stopped to look back?

One of my mentors, Tony Robbins, says our brains often think of the negative things first because our brains are millions of years old. They’re programed to help us survive – so they constantly go into looking for trouble because they’re trying to protect us. But here’s the cool thing: That doesn’t have to be our story. Just because we think something doesn’t mean it’s true. And we can stop the negative narratives in our minds.

Lately I’ve been feeling a lot of anxiety when it comes to the growth of my personal and professional life. Why am I giving myself a self-imposed anxiety attack all the time?

I’m only feeling anxiety because I haven’t hit my five-year goal in one year. Instead, I’m focused on what still needs to be done. But when I stop and look back, I’ve actually done A LOT in the last year. I’ve never stopped and given myself the grace to say, “Hey, you’ve done a really great job.”

Are we setting our expectations maybe a little too big? Remember this: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Give yourself the time and grace to build your own empires.

As I was dealing with my anxiety, I thought back to episode 26 where my former co-host and I dig into a chapter from “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. The chapter and episode are all about being present, and how we only feel anxiety when we’re not being in the moment.

Let’s focus on what you have done and live in gratitude for what you HAVE accomplished so we can put the law of attraction into play and continue bringing things in our lives that we can be grateful for.

Exercise

Make a list specific to what you have done from May 2018-May 2019 (or whenever you’re reading this). List out what you’ve accomplished both personally and professionally. I want you to really recognize and celebrate each thing you accomplished. See how you’ve moved the needle in the midst of the grind. Come up for air and look at the bigger picture.

Write yourself a thank you note for everything you did last year – and thank yourself for everything you’re about to do. Tuck that letter some place and pull it out whenever you need a boost.
