I had this moment recently where I was feeling super overwhelmed and defeated. I was really at a breaking point. I don’t want my story to be that I’m overworked and not enjoying the things I’m doing. There are so many amazing things happening and I don’t want to let overwhelm distract from the joy. I’ve started implementing these tips and have noticed a huge shift in how present I feel in my day-to-day life. So I hope these help you do the same!
- Let yourself feel the emotions.
That’s right. Feel the feels and let it all out. It’s so important to let ourselves feel our emotions so that they pass through us. If we don’t, they could stick around and manifest in other less-positive ways. Journal about it, cry, whatever you need (within reason, let’s not go blow up at someone or anything!).
- Meditate and listen to good music.
This step really, really helps me. I love meditation, specifically when focused on gratitude. It attracts so much good into your life. Guided meditations really help me keep my mind present and focused, but you can also put some instrumental music on and be still in silence. I really encourage you to try incorporating daily meditation into your life. I promise it will really help.
Turning on music that inspires you and makes you feel good can completely change your vibration. I can make a mean playlist and I love turning on some good music to help me live at a peak state. - Make a list of all that is good in your life and everything that is working.
Jump back to my post on episode 42 to learn more about this, but you will be so amazed looking at everything that is actually working for you. Write down all the things – big and small. Once you have your list, go back and give gratitude for every single thing. This may take a while and that’s OK, but go back and say why you’re grateful for each thing. Dig deep and feel that vibration. When we’re grateful, we’re not anxious or overwhelmed.
- Make a plan.
We tend to get overwhelmed when there are a ton of moving parts of our lives and no organization. I’ve felt this personally after my recent move and I feel like a one-woman show trying to do so many things in the midst of relocating. I really hit this wall and fortunately had my boyfriend step in to help me plan out the next best steps for my businesses in 2019. If you have another person you can go to to get an outside perspective, that can be a huge help. Look to friends or coaches to help talk you through roadblocks and figure out a plan to tackle them. There is peace in a plan.
- Leave room to actually enjoy your life and have FUN.
You can’t only be working. You have to have fun. Make sure you are balancing that because if we are just grinding and hustling, you will burn out. You have to be happy and present on your way to your goals. You have every right and permission to feel happy right now. You’re always going to be on a journey so don’t forget that you’re here to truly ENJOY the process.
A listener told me once that we’re taught growing up to find a career that makes us happy. But as she’s grown up, she’s realized she wants to find a life that makes her happy – and to find a career that supports that. We are not put here to just work. We’re here to be human beings and to enjoy our lives. Our work should support your joy, not deprive you of it.
I’ve been practicing these five tips the last week and have felt such relief from overwhelming thoughts and feelings. If you have your own tips, I’d love to hear them. Tell me on Instagram @WhatTheEffPodcast.
